About this tour

This session moves quickly through Sofia's history in under an hour, opening at the exposed Roman streets of the Serdica Ruins and closing at the gold dome of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. You get the city's Roman, Ottoman and modern layers explained through two buildings rather than a long list of sites. It works as a fast overview rather than a detailed walk.

The guide checks sound by the ruins, then tells the story in the order it happened, slowing down wherever a building deserves it. You can ask questions as things come up, and they often steer which parts get more detail. A short list of names and dates arrives by message after the call.

This suits anyone who wants Sofia's history in outline before a longer visit or a more detailed tour later. It also works as a quick refresher if the details have faded since you were last there.

  • Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Sofia before heading out.

  2. Serdica Ruins 21 min

The camera looks down into the Serdica Ruins, Roman streets left exposed beside a metro station in the middle of the modern city. The guide uses them as a starting point for Sofia's layered history.

  3. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral 21 min

The session ends outside the gold-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, built in the early 1900s and now the symbol of the city. The guide explains why this building, more than any other, sums up how Sofia sees itself.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Sofia: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Tarator (cold cucumber soup) and City Centre, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Sofia time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
