Piazza Vecchia, nine centuries in one square
Highlights
- A square built across nine centuries
- One of Italy's oldest civic halls
- Two buildings, facing each other
- Città Alta's Renaissance heart
- Bergamo's most photographed square
About this tour
This session covers Piazza Vecchia, the Renaissance square at the heart of Città Alta. You see the arcades of the Palazzo della Ragione, one of Italy's oldest civic buildings, then turn to the library facing it from the opposite end, built centuries later to complete the square. It is a short session on how one square can hold nine hundred years of building.
We start with a sound check by the palazzo, since the square draws a steady flow of visitors through the day. I turn to face the library for the second stop and take your questions about either building as we go. A short reading note follows by message afterwards.
It suits anyone with an interest in civic architecture or a first look at Città Alta's centre. It also works well as an opening session before exploring the upper town further.

The camera takes in the square's Renaissance arcades, and I explain how the Palazzo della Ragione at one end has served as a civic building for nearly nine centuries.
-
Biblioteca Angelo Mai facade 21 min
We turn to face the library at the opposite end, and I point out how its design was meant to answer the older palazzo across the square.

A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Casoncelli alla bergamasca and Città Alta, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
