The Alcazaba, Málaga's Moorish fortress
Highlights
- A fortress built up a hillside
- Gates designed to slow attackers
- Gardens echoing the Alhambra
- Plasterwork hinting at a lost palace
- Centuries of the same route
About this tour
This session climbs the Alcazaba from its lower gates to the remains of its residential palace at the top, tracing an 11th-century fortress built in stages up the hillside. You see the terraced gardens partway up and the carved plasterwork that survives near the summit. The three stops follow the same route visitors have used for centuries, just explained properly along the way.
We begin at the lower gates with a steady check of the climb, then move up through the gardens to the palace remains, pausing at each stage to catch breath and explain what changed. I answer questions throughout and send a short timeline of the different building phases afterward.
This suits anyone who wants Málaga's most important monument explained in full rather than rushed through. It also works well as a first session before continuing up to Gibralfaro.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Malaga before heading out.
-
The lower gates 21 min
The camera passes through the first of several horseshoe-arched gates, and I explain how the zigzag path between them was designed to slow down any attacking force.
-
The garden terraces 21 min
You see the stepped terraces planted with jasmine and citrus, restored in the 20th century, and I point out how the layout copies the same idea used at the Alhambra in Granada.
-
The upper palace walls 21 min
We finish near the remains of the residential palace at the top, and I explain what the carved plasterwork that survives here suggests about the rest of the building, most of which is gone.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Malaga: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Espeto de sardinas and Centro Histórico, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
