About this tour
This session shows Zona Velha before the crowds arrive, from its painted doors to the harbour where the night's catch comes in. You see the old fishing quarter as locals experience it in the early morning. Catarina walks the same streets she grew up on, camera in hand.
The call opens with a short sound check, then moves door by door through the old town before settling at the harbour for the market's opening. Questions come up naturally as you spot details on screen, and Catarina answers them as she walks.
This suits anyone curious about Madeira's fishing traditions who prefers an early start over a crowded one. It works equally well for returning visitors who want to see a side of Funchal they missed the first time.
Included

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Funchal before heading out.
-
Zona Velha doors 21 min
You see the old fishing quarter's front doors, each one painted by a different local artist since 2010. I stop at a few favourites and explain what the image means to the family who lives behind it.
-
Harbour fish market 21 min
The camera moves to the harbour edge where boats unload black scabbardfish before the market opens. I point out the fish's strange eyes and explain why it only lives in deep water off Madeira.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Funchal: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Espetada and Zona Velha, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.

- Times are shown in Madeira time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
