  • A calmer side of a famous landmark

About this tour

This session takes in the exterior of the largest medieval church in the Baltic states and the quiet cloister courtyard beside it. You see how the building's style shifts across the centuries it took to complete, then a calmer courtyard holding architectural fragments from earlier structures. It is a short session pairing a famous facade with a corner most visitors miss.

I start with a sound check at the main facade, then move into the cloister for a quieter, slower look, taking questions throughout. A short note on the fragments in the courtyard follows by message afterwards.

It suits anyone interested in medieval architecture or quieter corners of busy landmarks. It also pairs well with a St Peter's tower session.

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Riga before heading out.

The camera holds on the largest medieval church in the Baltic states, and I explain how its style shifted across centuries of construction.

You see the quiet cloister courtyard beside the cathedral, and I point out architectural fragments kept there from earlier buildings.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Black Balsam and Old Town, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Riga time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking".
