A Pilgrim church and a painter's birthplace, live
Highlights
- A church connected to the Pilgrims' voyage
- What actually led them to Leiden first
- The quiet street where Rembrandt was born
- Two very different histories, close together
- A fuller picture of the old centre
About this tour
This session pairs two very different Leiden stories, a Gothic church connected to the Pilgrims before their voyage to America, and the quiet street where Rembrandt was born. You see the church's exterior and then the small monument marking the painter's birthplace nearby. It is a session about two very different kinds of history sitting close together.
We spend more time at the church, since there is simply more to see there, before walking a short distance to the birthplace site. I keep the explanation for each specific rather than a general potted history.
It suits anyone interested in either the Pilgrim story or Rembrandt's early life. It works well alongside the fortress and canal session for a fuller picture of the old centre.

You see the Gothic church where the Pilgrims worshipped before sailing for America in 1620, and I explain what actually led that congregation to Leiden in the first place.

The camera moves to a quiet street marked with a small monument, and I explain how the painter born here in 1606 spent his early years in this city before moving to Amsterdam.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
