Brosundet's canal, Art Nouveau facade by facade
Highlights
- A canal lined with Art Nouveau facades
- Carved plant motifs, a few years apart
- Architects trained across Europe, compared
- A town rebuilt entirely in stone
- Where the canal meets the open harbour
About this tour
This session walks Brosundet, the narrow canal running through Ålesund's town centre, lined with Art Nouveau facades built after the 1904 fire. You see carved plant motifs and turrets on buildings just a few years apart in age, and the point where the canal opens into the harbour. Kari traces the different architects' versions of the same style block by block.
She moves slowly along the canal, stopping at whichever facade shows the clearest detail that day depending on the light. Questions about the fire itself come up on almost every session, and she answers them before moving on to the rebuilding.
This suits anyone interested in architecture who has never heard of Ålesund's Art Nouveau centre before. It pairs with Kari's second session up Kongensgate for the fuller rebuilt town.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Ålesund before heading out.
-
Canal-side facades 17 min
The camera follows Brosundet, the narrow harbour canal, and I point out turrets and carved plant motifs on facades built within a few years of each other after 1904.
-
A rebuilt corner 17 min
At one corner I show how architects trained in Germany and Belgium brought slightly different versions of the same style, so the details change from block to block if you look closely.
-
Canal to harbour 17 min
The walk finishes where the canal opens into the wider harbour, and I explain why the whole town was rebuilt in stone rather than the wood that burned so completely in 1904.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Ålesund: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Klippfisk (dried salted cod) and Aspøy, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Oslo time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
