About this tour

This session walks the Clydeside past a surviving dockside crane and the open ground of a former shipyard. You see the crane's scale up close and the pattern of old slipways still traceable in the paving nearby. Robert explains what the river once produced and how the industry's decline reshaped this whole stretch of the city.

After a short sound check by the crane, the walk continues along the riverbank at an easy pace, pausing at the old shipyard site for questions. Robert answers as you go and sends a short note afterwards on which buildings along the river are worth a closer look.

It suits anyone interested in industrial history and how a city adapts after its main industry disappears. It also appeals to those with family connections to the shipyards.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Glasgow before heading out.

  2. The old crane line 21 min

The camera follows the riverbank past a surviving dockside crane, one of the few left standing from the working river. Robert explains what these cranes once loaded and unloaded.

  3. A former shipyard site 21 min

Further along, open ground marks where a major shipyard once stood. Robert points out the surviving pattern of the old slipways, still visible in the paving.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Glasgow: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Scotch pie and Finnieston, worth a slower look.

  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
