Saint-Sernin and the pilgrim city
Highlights
- Europe's largest surviving Romanesque church
- The crypt where relics are kept
- Carved capitals, each a different scene
- A monastery garden that outlived the Revolution
- Toulouse's place on the pilgrim road
About this tour
This session traces Toulouse's pilgrim history, from the vast brick basilica of Saint-Sernin to the quiet cloister of the Musée des Augustins nearby. You see the scale that medieval crowds once needed and the carved detail that survived centuries of change. The route follows a single thread, one city built partly to serve travellers passing through.
After a quick check that you can see and hear me clearly, I start outside Saint-Sernin so you get the full height of the tower before we go in. Inside I slow down at the carvings and the crypt, then we finish in the museum garden where it is easier to talk through what we have seen. A short note with the names and dates follows after the call.
This suits anyone drawn to church architecture or medieval history, and travellers who like a session with a clear historical thread rather than a general overview. It also works well paired with a walking session in the old town.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Toulouse before heading out.
-
Saint-Sernin Basilica exterior 17 min
The camera shows the largest Romanesque church left standing in Europe, its brick and stone tower rising above the surrounding rooftops. I explain why it grew so large, built to hold the crowds of medieval pilgrims walking toward Santiago de Compostela.
-
Inside the basilica 17 min
Filming is normal here, so you see the long Romanesque nave and the crypt where relics are kept below the altar. I point out the carved capitals on the columns, each one carved with a different scene.
-
Musée des Augustins garden 17 min
We move to the quiet cloister garden of the former Augustinian monastery, now a fine arts museum, and the camera lingers on the Romanesque sculpture kept under the old arcades. I explain how the monastery survived the Revolution when so many others did not.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Toulouse: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Saucisse de Toulouse and Carmes, worth a slower look.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
