Bazeos Tower: a monastery turned gallery
Highlights
- Thick walls built against pirate raids
- A monastery tower turned summer gallery
- Old stone framing new exhibitions
- Small defensive windows explained up close
- Naxos inland history, one tower at a time
About this tour
This session covers Bazeos Tower, a fortified seventeenth century monastery building now used as a gallery and cultural venue. Irini explains how its thick walls and small windows were built to withstand pirate raids common at the time. She then shows the courtyard, where changing art exhibitions now hang against the old stone.
Irini checks her connection outside the tower before walking around its base, pointing out the defensive features as she goes. She answers questions about both the building's history and its current use and moves into the courtyard once the exterior is covered. A short list of what was seen follows the call.
This suits travellers interested in Cycladic history and contemporary art together. It also works well as a quieter inland stop away from the coastal villages.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
