Villa Tugendhat, modernism in a quiet street
Highlights
- A UNESCO house on a quiet street
- A glass wall radical for its time
- Modernism built for one Brno family
- Design choices explained from outside
- One of the era's most important houses
About this tour
This session covers Villa Tugendhat from outside, the modernist house designed by Mies van der Rohe for a Brno industrial family. You see the quiet street it sits on, then the garden facade with its long glass wall, radical for a private house at the time it was built. It is a focused look at one of the most important buildings of its era, seen from where the public can actually stand.
I start on the street side and move around to the garden facade for the second stop, explaining the design choices as clearly as the angle allows. Questions come as we go, and I am happy to describe an interior detail even though we are viewing from outside. A short note on visiting the interior separately follows by message afterwards.
This suits anyone interested in architecture or design history. It also works well paired with the Moravian Gallery session for a fuller look at the city's art and design.

-
Approach to the villa 21 min
The camera takes in the quiet residential street, and I explain why a UNESCO-listed house by Mies van der Rohe sits here rather than in a museum district.
-
The villa's garden facade 21 min
We move around to the garden side, and I point out the long glass wall that was radical for a private house when it was built.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Brno: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Guláš s knedlíky (goulash with bread dumplings) and Centre (within the ring), worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Prague time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
