About this tour

This session follows Kilkenny's older, stranger buildings after dark, from the pub linked to a famous medieval trial to the ruined abbey tower standing inside a modern brewery yard. You see the exteriors lit for evening and hear the real history behind each one, not invented folklore. It closes at a working Dominican church that has stood on the same site since the thirteenth century.

After a quick sound check we move between the three stops on foot, with a few minutes of quiet camera time at each before I talk through what actually happened there. I take questions as we walk rather than at the end, and I send a short reading list afterwards for anyone who wants the fuller history.

It suits anyone who likes history with a genuine edge to it, told from documented records rather than invented ghost stories. It also works well in the evening for viewers in different time zones.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Kilkenny before heading out.

  2. Kyteler's Inn 17 min

The camera stops outside one of Ireland's oldest pubs, and I explain the fourteenth-century witchcraft trial of Alice Kyteler that still shapes the building's reputation.

  3. St Francis Abbey Tower 17 min

You see the ruined medieval tower standing inside a working brewery yard, an odd pairing I explain stop by stop as we look up at the stonework.

  4. Black Abbey 17 min

The session closes at a thirteenth-century Dominican friary still used for worship, and I describe how the building survived when so many others nearby did not.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Kilkenny: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Kilkenny farmhouse cheese and Irishtown, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Dublin time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
