The Beguinage, a quiet courtyard world
Highlights
- A bridge into a walled community
- Lay religious women, centuries of history
- Whitewashed houses around a lawn
- Bruges' noise, suddenly gone quiet
- A small world within the city
About this tour
This session covers the Beguinage, a walled courtyard community just off the busier canals. You see the bridge and gate leading in, and hear how it once housed lay religious women, then step into the courtyard itself, where the noise of the city fades almost completely. It is a short, quiet detour from the busier parts of Bruges.
We start with a sound check right at the entrance, since the bridge can be busy with visitors. I move inside for the second stop and take your questions about the community's history as we go. A short reading note follows by message afterwards.
It suits anyone who wants a calmer, quieter stop between busier sessions. It also works well as a short addition after a longer canal walk.
Included

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
