Egon Schiele, and the town that expelled him
Highlights
- An artist driven out by his neighbours
- His mother's home town, briefly his own
- A style too unsettling for its time
- A gallery built around a scandal
- Local history through a painter's eyes
About this tour
This session covers the Egon Schiele Art Centrum and the story behind it, since the painter's short stay in the town ended badly rather than peacefully. You see the gallery building itself, then a room of his work, with the style that unsettled local residents at the time. It is a focused look at one artist's difficult local history.
I start outside the gallery and move indoors for the second stop, adjusting the pace to whatever is on display that day. Questions come as we go, and I am happy to spend longer on a single painting if it interests you. A short reading list on Schiele's time here follows afterwards.
This suits anyone interested in art history with an edge of local scandal attached. It also works well paired with the castle theatre session for a fuller look at the town's art.

The camera takes in the gallery building, and I explain why Schiele came to this, his mother's home town, in the first place.

We move through a room of his paintings, and I point out the style that eventually made the town's residents uncomfortable enough to drive him out.

-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Guláš s knedlíky (goulash with bread dumplings) and Zámek, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
