The Grand Ducal Palace and the changing of the guard
Highlights
- A palace in use since the 1500s
- Renaissance facade, still a working residence
- A guard change, explained
- Luxembourg's constitutional monarchy, plainly told
- One building, centuries of continuity
About this tour
This session covers the Grand Ducal Palace, the official residence of Luxembourg's ruling family since the sixteenth century. You see the ornate Renaissance facade and hear how its role has changed over the centuries, then watch the guard at the entrance and hear about the ceremonial side of the constitutional monarchy today. It is a short session built around one working royal building.
We start with a sound check on the street facing the palace, since it can be busy with visitors. I explain the ceremonial details plainly and without excess formality, then take your questions about the monarchy as we go. A short reading list follows by message afterwards.
It suits anyone curious about how a small constitutional monarchy actually works day to day. It also works well paired with a session on the cathedral nearby.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
