About this tour

This shorter session follows the last surviving gate of Coimbra's medieval walls and the street layout that still marks where those walls once stood. Francisco holds the camera on the gate's worn stone and the relief carving above it. He then traces the vanished wall line through the shape of later buildings.

Francisco keeps a steady, unhurried pace at the gate before moving along the street, pointing out where the wall's foundations are still visible in places. He answers questions about the medieval city's boundaries as they come up. A short note on the gate's restoration follows the session.

This suits anyone interested in how a modern street plan can still reveal a much older city underneath it. It pairs well with the cathedral session for a fuller sense of medieval Coimbra.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Coimbra before heading out.

  2. The Moorish-era gate 15 min

The camera holds on the arch's worn stone, one of the last surviving entrances to the medieval walled city. Francisco points out the relief carving above it and explains what it depicts.

  3. The line of the old walls 15 min

Following the street beyond the gate, Francisco traces where the city walls used to run, now marked only by the shape of the buildings that replaced them.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Coimbra: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Vinho do Dão and Santa Clara, worth a slower look.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
