Where Frans Hals lived and worked, from outside, live
Highlights
- A former almshouse turned art museum
- The painter most closely tied to this city
- A quiet courtyard built for elderly residents
- The building's history, not just its collection
- A fuller picture alongside the market square session
About this tour
This session looks at the building connected to Haarlem's most famous painter from outside its galleries, a former almshouse that now holds the city's collection of his civic guard portraits. You see the facade and the quiet inner courtyard the building was originally built around. It is a history-of-the-building session rather than an art-collection one.
We spend most of the time on the facade and courtyard, since that is what the camera can properly show without a ticket. I explain the painter's connection to the city as we look at the building.
It suits anyone interested in the building's history as much as the paintings inside. It pairs well with the market square session for a fuller picture of the city centre.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Haarlem before heading out.
-
Frans Hals Museum Facade 15 min
You see the former almshouse building that now holds the museum's collection of Frans Hals portraits, and I explain why the painter is so closely tied to this specific city.
-
Almshouse Courtyard 15 min
The camera looks into the building's quiet inner courtyard, and I point out how the layout still reflects its original use housing elderly residents.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Haarlem: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Haring and Scheepmakerskwartier, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
