About this tour

This session traces what remains of Bilbao's medieval walls, from a surviving stretch between buildings to the old town's original parish church and the riverside edge that once marked the city's limit. You see how small the medieval town actually was compared with the Bilbao around it today. Jon uses these three points to sketch the city's earliest boundaries.

The walk connects three points that are easy to miss individually, with Jon explaining at each one how the medieval town related to the river and the hills around it. He answers questions about the city's growth as the walk continues.

This suits anyone who enjoyed Jon's Siete Calles session and wants the deeper history behind it. It also works well for viewers interested in how small a city's origins often are.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Bilbao before heading out.

  2. Wall remnants 17 min

A short stretch of the old defensive wall survives between buildings here, and I explain how far the medieval town's boundary once ran compared with today's old town.

  3. Santiago Cathedral exterior 17 min

From outside Bilbao's own Santiago cathedral, smaller and less visited than Santander's or Compostela's namesakes, I explain its role as the old town's original parish church.

  4. Ribera riverside edge 17 min

The walk ends where the old town meets the river, and I show how the water once marked the practical limit of the medieval city.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Bilbao: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Marmitako and Abandoibarra, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • Times are shown in Madrid time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
