About this tour

This session looks at Christ Church's dining hall from its famous staircase and doorway, the closest a video session can get without entering the ticketed interior. It covers the staircase's own vaulting and the hall's long-standing comparison to a well-known film set, separating what is documented from what has simply spread online. It is a short, focused look at one building's public face.

We start at the base of the staircase and climb slowly, pausing at the top for the doorway view into the hall. Questions almost always turn to the film comparisons, and I explain plainly what did and did not happen there. I finish with a note on which other college halls are worth comparing it to.

It suits viewers curious about the building behind a popular comparison rather than the comparison itself. It also suits anyone with limited time who wants one strong Christ Church stop rather than a full college tour.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Oxford before heading out.

  2. Stone staircase 21 min

The camera climbs the fan-vaulted stone staircase leading up to the hall, and I explain how the vaulting was actually added centuries after the stairs themselves were built.

  3. Hall doorway 21 min

From the doorway, you see the hall's timber roof and portraits lining the walls, and I explain why the room has drawn repeated comparisons to a certain film series without ever having been used to film it.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Oxford: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cream tea with scones and Jericho, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
