The Marlowe Theatre, from the riverside
Highlights
- A modern facade beside an old river
- A theatre named after a local playwright
- The riverside path leading to the entrance
- New architecture close to old streets
- A city's connection to its own writer
About this tour
This call looks at the city's main theatre, seen from the riverside path that leads up to its modern facade. You see the glass and stone frontage first, then the approach along the water that connects it to the older streets nearby. I explain the playwright the building is named after and his connection to the city.
We walk the riverside path toward the facade, taking questions about the theatre's programme and its namesake along the way. A short note on local productions follows by message after the call.
This suits anyone interested in theatre or in how a modern building sits within an old city. It also pairs well with a riverside walk earlier in the day.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Canterbury before heading out.
-
Theatre facade 15 min
The camera takes in the modern glass and stone frontage from the riverside, and I explain why the theatre carries the name of a playwright born in the city centuries ago.
-
Riverside approach 15 min
You follow the path along the water leading up to the theatre, and I point out how the newer building sits deliberately close to the older streets around it.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Canterbury: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cream tea with Kentish strawberries and Cathedral Precincts, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
