Rubens' Antwerp, from his own doorstep
Highlights
- A house designed by the painter himself
- Baroque taste, built rather than painted
- A garden laid out to classical rules
- Rubens' Antwerp, from the outside in
- One building, one artist's whole world
About this tour
This session looks at Rubens' Antwerp through the house he designed and lived in. You see the Baroque garden facade from the street, then look through the gate at the grounds he laid out himself. It focuses on one building as a way into the artist's wider life and taste.
We start with a sound check outside the main facade, since the street can be busy with visitors to the museum. I move to the garden gate for the second stop and take your questions about Rubens' life and work as we go. A short reading list follows by message afterwards.
It suits anyone with an interest in Rubens or Baroque architecture. It also works well before or after visiting the house's museum yourself.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Antwerp before heading out.
-
Rubens House exterior 21 min
The camera takes in the house's Baroque garden facade, designed by Rubens himself, and I explain how unusual it was for an artist to build on this scale.
-
Rubens House garden gate 21 min
We look through the garden gate at the grounds behind, and I point out the layout Rubens designed to reflect his own taste in classical architecture.

Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Antwerp: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bolleke beer and Het Zuid, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
