Palazzo Vecchio, a town hall built like a fortress
Highlights
- A town hall built like a fortress
- Crenellations meant for defence, not decoration
- A tower placed off-centre, for a reason
- Politics read straight off the stonework
- History explained through a defensive design
About this tour
This session looks at Palazzo Vecchio through its defensive design rather than its role as a government building. You see the crenellated roofline up close, and the tower's slightly asymmetric position on the building. The camera treats the building as a fortress first and a town hall second.
We spend time explaining why Florence needed its government building to look like it could survive an attack, since that context changes how the whole building reads. I point out the tower's position as we go, and take questions on the city's political history.
It suits anyone interested in how architecture reflects political instability. It also pairs well with the Piazza della Signoria sculpture session outside it.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Florence before heading out.
-
Crenellations 21 min
The camera holds on the building's crenellated top, and I explain why a town hall was designed to withstand attack rather than simply look impressive.
-
Tower 21 min
Turning to the tower, I explain its asymmetric position on the building and what that tells us about how the structure grew over time.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Florence: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Crostini di fegatini and Oltrarno, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
