Schwabing's bohemian cafés
Highlights
- Cafés once filled with writers and painters
- A boulevard grown from a bohemian quarter
- Buildings that outlived their famous tenants
- Schwabing's artistic century, traced on foot
- A district shaped by its own past
About this tour
This session walks through Schwabing following the traces of its bohemian past. You see former café buildings once filled with writers and artists and the main avenue that grew up around them over the following decades. It moves from a specific, half-hidden history to a busier street shaped by it.
I keep a conversational pace throughout, since much of this district's story depends on knowing which ordinary-looking building once held which café. Questions about the artists who lived here are always welcome, and I send a short note afterwards.
This suits anyone interested in early twentieth-century art and literary history. It also works well paired with a session on the district's quieter side streets.

A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Obatzda (cheese spread) and Schwabing, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
