About this tour

This session covers the castle's Baroque theatre, one of only a handful left anywhere with its original scenery and stage machinery still in place. You see the auditorium itself, then the backstage area where storm and wave effects were once produced by hand. It is a focused look at 18th-century stagecraft rather than the castle's more familiar rooms.

I start in the auditorium and move backstage for the second stop, explaining the machinery as clearly as the camera angle allows. Questions come throughout, and I am glad to describe an effect a second time if it is hard to picture. A short note on how rarely the theatre still performs follows afterwards.

This suits anyone interested in theatre history or old mechanical ingenuity rather than only architecture. It also pairs well with the Schiele gallery session for a broader look at the town's art.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cesky Krumlov before heading out.

  2. Theatre auditorium 21 min

The camera takes in the auditorium, and I explain why this is one of very few Baroque theatres left with its original scenery and stage machinery intact.

  3. Backstage machinery 21 min

We look toward the wings, and I describe how stagehands once produced storm and wave effects using the same ropes and drums still there today.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Cesky Krumlov: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Kapr (carp from the region's fish ponds) and Nové Město, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Prague time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
