Inside the cross-shaped market
Highlights
- A market built in a cross shape
- Two generations behind one counter
- Village cheeses, compared properly
- Butchers and olive barrels in rows
- Taste and smell, described in detail
About this tour
This session walks the aisles of Chania's covered market, a cross-shaped building from 1913 where I have sold cheese for over twenty years, following my father before me. You see the butchers, olive barrels and cheese counters that fill the space and hear how village cheeses differ from someone who tastes them daily. It stays inside the market throughout.
I move slowly past each stall, describing what is on display and answering questions as they come, then linger longest at my own counter. Nothing tangible reaches the screen, so I describe every taste and smell in detail instead.
This suits anyone curious about Cretan food culture before shopping or eating elsewhere. It also works well early in a visit as an introduction to local produce.
Included

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
