Prior Park's landscape garden, live
Highlights
- One of four bridges of its kind
- Three lakes built to look natural
- A ditch hidden to keep the view clear
- A stone merchant's garden above the city
- Eighteenth century landscape design in full
About this tour
This session walks the grounds of Prior Park, a landscape garden built by a local stone merchant with advice from some of the best-known designers of his day. You see the Palladian Bridge, the linked lakes and the wide view back over Bath. I explain the tricks used to make a planned garden look wild.
We begin with a sound check on the top lawn, then move down through the garden stop by stop, pausing at each view. Questions come naturally as we walk, and I send a short note on the garden's history afterwards.
It suits anyone who enjoys gardens, landscape design or a slower, greener session away from the streets. It also works well as a calmer alternative to the city centre tours.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide
- Questions to your guide all the way
- A short list of places to visit later
Not included
- Internet connection
- Travel to the city
Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Bath before heading out.
-
Palladian Bridge 21 min
You see one of only four Palladian bridges of this design left standing anywhere, set across a narrow valley lake, and I explain how it was built purely for the view rather than for crossing.
-
Serpentine lakes 21 min
Looking down the line of the valley, you follow the three linked lakes that shape the whole garden, laid out in the eighteenth century to look entirely natural though every curve was planned.
-
Ha-ha and viewpoint 21 min
From the top lawn you look over a hidden ditch called a ha-ha, built so grazing sheep stayed out of the garden without any visible fence spoiling the view down to the city.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Bath: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bath bun and Georgian Bath, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
