About this tour

This longer session moves across three periods of Coimbra's history in one route, from the newer of the city's two cathedrals to a barely visible trace of its former Jewish quarter and finally to the river crossing that has repeatedly reshaped the city. Francisco explains why Coimbra ended up with two cathedrals rather than one. Each stop adds a different layer to the same small area of the old town.

Francisco moves at a measured pace between the three stops, giving each the time its history deserves rather than rushing through them evenly. He is careful to separate confirmed history from local tradition, especially around the Jewish quarter's disappearance. A short reading list follows the session for anyone who wants more detail.

This suits anyone who wants a single session that ties together several strands of Coimbra's past rather than one narrow topic. It also works well as a closing session after visiting the cathedral and gate separately.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Coimbra before heading out.

  2. Sé Nova, the newer cathedral 17 min

The camera holds on the Jesuit-built facade of the newer cathedral, constructed once the old one grew too small for the city's needs. Francisco explains why Coimbra ended up with two cathedrals rather than one.

  3. Traces of the Jewish quarter 17 min

In a quiet side street below the university, Francisco points out a stone lintel carved with a barely visible mark from the city's former Jewish quarter, cleared in the 15th century. He explains what evidence survives of that community today.

  4. The old river crossing 17 min

At the Mondego's edge, Francisco points out where the medieval bridge into the city once stood, repeatedly rebuilt after floods. He explains how the river has both connected and threatened Coimbra throughout its history.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Coimbra: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Arroz de lampreia and Baixa, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Lisbon time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
