The bear moat and the river's tight bend
Highlights
- Live bears kept since the 18th century
- A river bend wrapping the whole town
- A moat with genuine residents
- The site's original defence, explained
- Water shaping a town's whole layout
About this tour
This session covers the castle's bear moat and a view over the river's tight bend around the old town, two features that explain how the site was chosen in the first place. You see the moat and its long-kept residents, then the water itself curling almost fully around the historic centre. It is a nature-focused look at the town's defensive geography.
I move at an easy pace between the two stops, since both reward a moment of just looking rather than constant commentary. Questions come naturally, especially once the bears are in view. A short note on the moat's history follows by message afterwards.
This suits anyone who wants to understand why the town sits exactly where it does. It also suits families or anyone simply curious about the bears.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
