Crystal Palace gardens, terrace by terrace
Highlights
- A garden built where glass once stood
- Terraces revealing the view gradually
- Dense planting toward the hillside's base
- A 19th-century structure, long since replaced
- Porto's quietest hillside garden
About this tour
This session moves through the Crystal Palace gardens terrace by terrace, starting where the original 19th-century glass structure once stood before it was replaced. Ana Rita explains what stands on the site today and why the gardens kept the old name regardless. The paths descending the hillside reveal the view gradually as the planting changes.
Ana Rita keeps a relaxed pace down the slope, naming plants as she passes them and checking the picture holds on the steeper sections. She takes questions about the garden's design and its history throughout. A short note on the terraces' layout follows the session.
This suits anyone with an interest in gardens and landscape design rather than architecture. It also works well as a quieter session away from Porto's busier old-town landmarks.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Porto before heading out.
-
The upper terraces 21 min
The camera moves along neat lawns and clipped hedges on the garden's upper level, laid out where the original 19th-century glass palace once stood. Ana Rita explains what replaced the structure and when.
-
The descending paths 21 min
Following the paths down the hillside, the planting turns denser as the garden drops toward the river. Ana Rita points out how the terraces were designed to reveal the view gradually rather than all at once.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Porto: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Francesinha and Ribeira, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
