Vlaeykensgang, Antwerp's quiet alley
Highlights
- An alley easy to walk straight past
- A shoemakers' quarter, centuries old
- Antwerp's noise, suddenly gone quiet
- Houses that have survived since the 1500s
- A small detour worth taking
About this tour
This session covers Vlaeykensgang, a narrow alley tucked just off one of Antwerp's busier streets. You see the easy-to-miss entrance and hear about its history as a shoemakers' quarter, then step into the quiet courtyard beyond, lined with houses dating back centuries. It is a short, quiet detour from the busier parts of the centre.
We start with a sound check right at the entrance, since the alley itself stays remarkably quiet. I move inside for the second stop and take your questions about the houses and their history as we go. A short reading note follows by message afterwards.
It suits anyone who wants a calmer, less crowded stop between busier sessions. It also works well as a short addition after a longer walk through the centre.

Itinerary

Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Antwerp before heading out.
-
Vlaeykensgang entrance 15 min
The camera finds the narrow doorway that leads into the alley, easy to miss from the street, and I explain how it was once home to shoemakers.
-
Vlaeykensgang courtyard 15 min
Inside, the noise of the street disappears almost completely, and I point out the small houses that have survived here since the sixteenth century.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Antwerp: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Belgian waffles and Het Zuid, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
