  • Optics over a century old
  • Rooftops projected onto a screen

About this tour

This session climbs Torre Tavira, once the city's official watchtower among more than a hundred built for merchants to spot ships, and shows the working camera obscura inside. You see the live projected image of the rooftops outside moving in real time on the curved screen. The two stops move from the open rooftop to the darkened room housing the device.

We begin on the rooftop with a quick check of the view, then move inside to the camera obscura room, pausing there for most of the call since the projection itself takes time to watch properly. I explain the optics before demonstrating them, and answer questions throughout.

This suits anyone curious about historical optics as much as history itself, and travellers who enjoy a genuinely unusual demonstration. It runs at a steady pace suited to watching the projection settle.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cadiz before heading out.

  2. The watchtower rooftop 15 min

The camera looks out from the highest of the city's old watchtowers, once one of over a hundred used by merchants to spot incoming ships, and I explain why this particular tower was chosen as the official one.

  3. The camera obscura image 15 min

You see the live projected image the camera obscura casts onto a curved screen below, built from a mirror and lens system over a century old, moving in real time across the rooftops outside.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Cadiz: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Pescaíto frito and Santa María, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Madrid time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
