Madrid's literary quarter, book by book
Highlights
- Writers connected to one neighbourhood
- A reading list built around you
- Where to start, made simple
- Houses and plaques worth seeking out
- A short call, a lasting list
About this tour
This is a short planning call about the writers connected to the Barrio de las Letras rather than a walk through the neighbourhood itself. I talk through a handful of names worth knowing and what of theirs is worth reading first. You leave with a reading list built around your own interests.
We start with what you have already read, if anything, and I adjust the recommendations from there. I answer questions about specific writers or works as they come up rather than working through a fixed script. At the end I send over the list with a note on where to start.
This suits readers planning a visit to the neighbourhood who want context before they go. It also suits anyone who simply wants a starting point into Spanish literature.

-
Writers to know before you go 17 min
I talk through a handful of Spanish writers connected to the Barrio de las Letras, what to read before a visit and which houses or plaques are worth seeking out yourself. You tell me what you have already read and I build the list around that.
-
Your questions 5 min
Ask anything that is still on your mind, there is no fixed script.
-
A written note after the call 3 min
You get a short follow-up message with everything mentioned, so you do not have to remember it all.
Good to know
- A stable phone or internet connection, whichever the guide uses to reach you.
- No app to install. You answer when the guide calls, or join a video call if you would rather.
- Times are shown in Madrid time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The call is not recorded. Keep your own note of anything you want to remember, or wait for the follow-up message.
- Have your questions ready, though there is time to think of more as you go.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
