Europe Square: Medea and the Golden Fleece
Highlights
- Medea and the Golden Fleece, in bronze
- A Greek myth tied to this coast
- European-style facades by design
- A square built to make a statement
- Ancient story, very modern square
About this tour
This session covers Europe Square, centred on a statue of Medea holding the Golden Fleece above the crowds. You see the statue up close first, then the European-style facades built around it. It links ancient Greek myth about this coast to a very modern piece of city planning.
We start with the statue itself, giving its detail time on camera, then turn slowly to take in the square's buildings. I explain both the myth and the modern architecture, and questions work well at either point.
It suits anyone curious about how Batumi presents itself to visitors, and it pairs well with a boulevard or Piazza session nearby.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Batumi before heading out.
-
The Medea statue 15 min
The camera holds on the statue of Medea raised above the square, the Golden Fleece in her hands, and I explain her connection to this stretch of coast in Greek myth.
-
Facades around the square 15 min
We turn to the buildings framing the square, built in a deliberately European style, and I explain what that choice was meant to say about the city.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Batumi: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Black Sea mussels and Old Batumi, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Tbilisi time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
