Karl Johans gate, from the station to the palace
Highlights

- A neoclassical palace, seen from its forecourt

- A street built to lead straight to power
About this tour
This session follows Karl Johans gate from the station up to the Royal Palace, Oslo's main street and the working heart of the city. You see the Storting parliament building partway up and the palace forecourt at the top. Henrik explains how the street was planned to lead the eye straight to the monarchy.
The walk moves at a steady pace uphill, timed loosely around the guard change at the palace when it happens. Henrik answers questions about specific buildings as the street opens onto them, keeping the commentary to what is actually in frame.
This suits anyone who wants a single clear route through central Oslo rather than a scattered list of sights. It also works as an introduction before Henrik's shorter session through his own neighbourhood, Frogner.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Oslo before heading out.
-
Station forecourt 21 min
The walk begins at the station forecourt, and the camera follows Karl Johans gate as it climbs gently toward the palace, past shopfronts that have lined the street since it became Oslo's main promenade.
-
The Storting 21 min
Partway up the street the camera passes the Storting building, the seat of Norway's parliament since 1866, and I explain how the street's layout was planned around this stretch specifically.
-
Royal Palace forecourt 21 min
The session ends at the palace forecourt, where you see the neoclassical building from outside, and I describe the daily change of the guard that happens here when the king is in residence.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Oslo: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Brown cheese (brunost) and Grünerløkka, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Oslo time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
