Jane Austen's Bath

- A ballroom front that still stands
- Sydney Gardens as Austen described it
- Her own letters, read on camera
- Georgian Bath's real social settings
About this tour
This call follows the streets and buildings that shaped Jane Austen's years in Bath, from the grand crescent to the pleasure gardens she wrote about. You see the real settings behind her Bath novels. I bring a few of her own lines along for context.
After a short sound check, we move between the three stops, reading a line or two of her letters at each one and stopping for your questions along the way. I send a short reading list afterwards.
It suits Austen readers and anyone curious about Georgian Bath's social world. It works equally well if you have read every novel or none at all.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide
- Questions to your guide all the way
- A short list of places to visit later
Not included
- Internet connection
- Travel to the city
Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Bath before heading out.
-
Royal Crescent corner 21 min
You see the corner house that anchors the Royal Crescent, a building of the kind Austen's characters visit and gossip about, and I read out one short line from her letters written while she lived nearby.
-
Assembly Rooms exterior 21 min
Outside the Assembly Rooms you look up at the plain Georgian front where balls and card games once filled the rooms inside, the setting for scenes in both Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.
-
Sydney Gardens 21 min
From the edge of Sydney Gardens, the pleasure garden Austen mentioned in her own letters, you see the paths and lawns much as they were laid out, and I point out where the old grotto used to stand.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Bath: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Afternoon tea and Georgian Bath, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
