About this tour

This session looks at the oldest building still standing in Amsterdam, tracing how a fourteenth-century church ended up surrounded by the streets of the old quarter rather than a quiet setting of its own. You see the church's exterior and the square pressed right up against it, where daily life continues regardless of the building's age. It is a session about how old and ordinary sit side by side here.

We move slowly around the church exterior, since its age is the whole point and rewards a careful look rather than a quick pass. I explain the building's long history as we circle it.

It suits anyone interested in how a city's oldest structures survive inside a busy modern setting. It works well as a short, early stop before a longer walk through the surrounding streets.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Amsterdam before heading out.

  2. Oude Kerk Exterior 15 min

You see the oldest surviving building in the city, consecrated in the early fourteenth century, and I explain how it ended up in the middle of what later became the old quarter's busiest streets.

  3. Church Square 15 min

The camera turns to the square around the church, and I point out how ordinary daily life continues to happen right up against a building this old.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Amsterdam: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bitterballen and De Pijp, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
