About this tour

This session covers an interwar housing estate built in a Bauhaus-influenced functionalist style for the families of local steelworkers. You see one of the clean-lined apartment blocks and then a shared courtyard laid out with light and green space in mind, unusual planning for its time. It is a look at a side of Košice most visitors never hear about.

I move between the block and the courtyard at an easy pace, drawing on research I did for my university thesis on the estate. Questions come in on both the architecture and the steelworkers who lived there, and I take them as we go. A short reading note follows for anyone who wants more detail.

This suits anyone with an interest in twentieth-century architecture or industrial history. It also works well paired with the forest session for a fuller picture of the city's edges.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Bratislava time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking".
