About this tour

This is a walk along Waterside and across the river by the town's small chain ferry, ending on the far bank for a clean view back at the theatres. It mixes the statue gardens, the working ferry crossing and the riverside path in one route. It draws on a former actor's sense of which angles and details a repeat visitor still stops for.

We start slowly through the gardens, then queue for the ferry the way any local would, with a short pause while it crosses. On the far bank we take live questions about the view and the building's history before heading back. I finish with a note on the ferry's operating hours for anyone who wants to cross it again later.

It suits anyone who prefers a walking session with a bit of movement and changing scenery over a single fixed spot. It also works well for repeat visitors who have already done the standard Shakespeare sites.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Stratford-upon-Avon before heading out.

  2. Bancroft Gardens edge 17 min

The route starts where the gardens meet Waterside, and I point out the bronze statue group of Shakespeare characters that has stood on this spot since the 1880s.

  3. Chain Ferry crossing 17 min

The camera follows the small hand-pulled chain ferry across the river, one of the last of its kind still working in England, and I explain how the ferryman hauls it across without an engine.

  4. Recreation Ground bank 17 min

From the far bank you get a clean view back across the water to the theatres, and I explain why this angle is the one most photographs of the building are taken from.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about Stratford-upon-Avon: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Fish and chips and Shottery, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
