  • A district changing one building at a time

About this tour

This walk covers Metaxourgeio, a former industrial district named for the silk factories once based here, now home to a growing number of artist studios. Ioanna shows the converted factory buildings and the small square at the neighbourhood's centre. She explains how the area changed slowly rather than all at once, leaving old and new side by side.

Ioanna checks the connection outside the old factory before walking the short distance to the square, pointing out specific studio signs along the way. She answers questions about which buildings changed use and when, and pauses at anything that looks newly opened. A short list of the studios and galleries seen follows the call.

This suits travellers interested in how a city's industrial past gets reused, particularly anyone following the contemporary art scene. It also works well for those who prefer a quieter district during the day.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Athens before heading out.

  2. A converted silk factory 21 min

Ioanna stands outside the old silk factory building that gave the neighbourhood its name, the camera picking out the industrial windows now fitted with artist studio signs.

  3. Avdi Square 21 min

In the small, slightly worn square at the centre of the district, she points out the mix of old apartment blocks, closed shopfronts and a handful of newer galleries moving in.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Athens: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Moussaka and Monastiraki, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.

  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.
