Filmpark Babelsberg: a working film town
Highlights
- A backlot street reused for decades
- A working soundstage, still in production
- Villas built for a studio's own staff
- One of the world's oldest film studios
- Production history, corner by corner
About this tour
This session walks the grounds of Filmpark Babelsberg, from a backlot street built entirely of facades to a working soundstage and the villas built for its directors and actors. You see how a single street corner has been reused across many different productions over the decades. The walk finishes among the villas, a small neighbourhood the studio grew around itself.
We open with a short sound check outside the main gate. I move at an easy pace between the three stops and take questions throughout about specific productions filmed here. Afterwards I send a short list of what we saw with a few production credits attached.
This suits anyone interested in film history or curious how a studio town actually works behind the cameras. It also works well for a slightly different angle on Potsdam beyond the palaces.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Potsdam before heading out.
-
The historic backlot street 21 min
The camera walks a street front built entirely from facades, and I point out which productions have used this same corner over the studio's long history.
-
A soundstage exterior 21 min
We pass one of the working soundstages, and I explain how the studio has stayed in active production since it opened in the early twentieth century.
-
The director's villas 21 min
The route passes a row of villas built for directors and actors, and I point out how the studio grew its own small neighbourhood around the production lots.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Potsdam: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Havelländische Zander (pike-perch from local lakes) and Brandenburger Straße, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
