About this tour

This session walks the Shore in Leith, looking at how old harbour buildings have become some of the city's best restaurants. You see warehouse conversions with tables facing the water and a former customs house whose purpose has entirely changed. Alison explains how the docks' working history shaped the food scene that replaced it.

After a short sound check by the water, the walk moves along the Shore at an easy pace, pausing at a kitchen window for a closer look, with questions welcomed throughout. Alison answers as you go and sends a short list of the buildings' original uses afterwards.

It suits anyone interested in how a working harbour becomes a dining destination, and works well before booking a table in Leith yourself. It also appeals to those curious about Edinburgh's port history.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Edinburgh before heading out.

  2. The Shore 21 min

The camera walks along the Shore, old warehouse buildings now holding restaurants with tables facing the water. Alison points out a former customs house, its purpose changed completely.

  3. A dockside kitchen window 21 min

A restaurant's open kitchen faces the street through a large window. Alison explains how Leith's food scene grew directly out of the old port's working history.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Edinburgh: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Haggis, neeps and tatties and Old Town, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
