A collection grown from a local society
Highlights
- A collection grown from a local society
- Old facade, new wing, side by side
- A deliberately understated 2021 extension
- Zurich's major art museum, from outside
- Two buildings, one deliberate contrast
About this tour
This session looks at one of the country's major art museums from outside its galleries. You see the original early twentieth-century facade and the newer, more understated extension added beside it in 2021. It stays outside both buildings throughout.
I explain how the collection grew from a modest local society into its current scale first, then point out the deliberate contrast between old and new facades. Questions about the artists represented are welcome throughout.
This suits anyone interested in art history and museum architecture together. It also works well paired with a walk through the surrounding cultural quarter.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

- A short list of places to visit later
Not included

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Zurich before heading out.
-
Kunsthaus Facade 21 min
You see the museum's original early twentieth-century facade, built to hold a collection that started as a modest local society's holdings.
-
Kunsthaus Extension 21 min
Next door, the camera finds a newer wing added in 2021, its plain stone facade deliberately understated compared with the original building.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Zurich: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Luxemburgerli (small macarons) and Kreis 4 (Langstrasse), worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Zurich time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How it works
- You get one join link after booking.
- Join from any device: phone, tablet or laptop.
- We meet on Google Meet and the link comes with your booking. I studied art history with a focus on the museum's own collection, so I go into real depth on what sits inside.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
