Trafalgar Square's lions and fountains at dusk
Highlights
- Lions cast from melted cannons
- A famous column completed in stages
- Fountains lit by a recent renovation
- A square's evening atmosphere
- Monuments with their own separate histories
About this tour
This session shows Trafalgar Square as the evening lights come on, from the bronze lions guarding Nelson's Column to the newly lit fountains. It covers the lions' delayed casting decades after the column and the relatively recent lighting renovation to the fountains. It is a short, atmosphere-led session focused on the square itself.
We start at the lions with their casting story, then move to the fountains for the lighting history. Questions about the square's various monuments come up steadily, and I answer with the kind of art history detail I enjoy most. I close with a note on which evenings the square is liveliest.
It suits evening viewers who enjoy atmosphere and lighting design. It also works well as a short add-on to the gallery session earlier the same day.

-
Bronze lions 15 min
The camera holds on one of the four bronze lions guarding Nelson's Column, and I explain how they were cast from melted-down cannons decades after the column itself was completed.
-
Lit fountains 15 min
Moving to the fountains, I point out how their current lighting design dates only from a 2009 renovation, despite the fountains themselves being much older.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about London: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Full English breakfast and Soho, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
