About this tour

This session shows Peckham's African and Caribbean grocers, the market stalls I grew up shopping at with my mother on Saturdays. It covers the staple vegetables stacked outside the stalls and the specialist fish and spice counters serving the area's West African and Caribbean communities. It is a food session grounded in a market rather than a restaurant strip.

We start at the grocer's crates with the staple ingredients explained, then move to the fish and spice counter for the specialist stock. Questions about specific ingredients come up constantly, and I answer with the kind of detail only growing up shopping here gives you. I send a short list of what to try afterwards.

It suits food-curious viewers who want an unfiltered, working market rather than a curated food hall. It also suits anyone interested in London's West African and Caribbean communities told through food.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of London before heading out.

  2. Grocer's crates 21 min

The camera holds on crates of plantain, yam and cassava stacked outside a grocer's stall, and I explain which of these staples are grown for the London market specifically rather than simply imported as surplus.

  3. Fish and spice counter 21 min

Moving to a fish and spice counter, I point out ingredients rarely stocked in mainstream supermarkets, and I explain how several suppliers here work directly with importers my own family has used for years.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about London: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Pie and mash and Notting Hill, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

Questions about this tour

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
