About this tour

This session walks Hampstead Heath from its historic bathing ponds through ancient woodland to the skyline view from Parliament Hill. It covers the ponds' Victorian origins and the surprising survival of genuine countryside inside a major city. It gives a green, unexpected contrast to London's more built-up sessions.

We start at the ponds with their history, then walk through woodland towards the hill, pausing wherever the path opens up nicely. At the summit I take time identifying landmarks across the skyline. I close with a note on the clearest seasons for the best view.

It suits nature lovers and anyone who wants proof that London holds genuine countryside close to its centre. It also suits early risers, since the heath is calmest before the day gets going.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 6 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of London before heading out.

  2. Bathing ponds 17 min

The camera holds on one of the heath's swimming ponds, and I explain how they have operated as public bathing spots since Victorian times, managed today by a dedicated group of regular swimmers.

  3. Woodland path 17 min

Walking through a stretch of ancient woodland, I point out how little this part of the heath has changed despite the city growing up around it on every side.

  4. Parliament Hill summit 17 min

From the top, you see the full city skyline spread out unexpectedly from what still feels like open countryside, and I point out which landmarks are visible on a clear day.

  5. Your questions 11 min

Time to ask anything about London: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 5 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Full English breakfast and Notting Hill, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
