About this tour

This session stands outside the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel with an art historian, working through some of the collection's best-known pieces without going inside the ticketed halls. You hear about the Laocoon and Belvedere Torso, the Raphael Rooms and the Gallery of Maps, before finishing in St Peter's Square looking toward the chapel that holds Michelangelo's ceiling. It stays outside the museum buildings throughout.

The call opens with a sound check, then the guide talks through each set of rooms from outside, leaving time for questions and ending with tips for planning a route through the real museum. A short list of what was covered is sent afterwards.

This suits anyone planning their own visit to the Vatican Museums, or wanting the background before seeing the art for themselves.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Rome before heading out.

  2. Vatican Museums entrance 21 min

Outside the spiral ramp entrance, the guide describes the Laocoon and the Belvedere Torso, two ancient sculptures that shaped how Michelangelo and other Renaissance artists studied the human body.

  3. Along the museum's outer wall 21 min

Walking beside the long wall on Viale Vaticano, the guide explains what lies behind it, the Raphael Rooms with the School of Athens, and the Gallery of Maps, a corridor painted with sixteenth-century regions of Italy.

  4. St Peter's Square, facing the chapel roof 21 min

From the square, looking toward the plain roofline of the Sistine Chapel, the guide describes Michelangelo's ceiling and Last Judgement inside, and offers a route for avoiding the busiest corridors on your own visit.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Rome: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Supplì and Trastevere, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
