Gose and Leipziger Lerche: a taste of Saxony
Highlights
- A sour beer style nearly lost
- A pastry that replaced an old dish
- Gose, explained at the brewhouse
- Leipziger Lerche's odd history
- Saxon flavours, two stops in
About this tour
This session moves between two of Leipzig's older food traditions, from a small Gose brewhouse to a bakery counter selling Leipziger Lerche. You see the sour, salted beer style explained at the source, a style that nearly disappeared before local brewers revived it. The session finishes at the bakery, with the story of a pastry created to replace an older, less appetising local dish.
We open with a short sound check outside the brewhouse. I move at an easy pace between the two stops and take questions about the beer and the pastry's history throughout. Afterwards I send a short note on where else to find both in the city.
This suits anyone curious about Saxon food and drink beyond the more famous German staples. It also works well alongside the Auerbachs Keller session for a fuller food picture.

The camera settles on a small brewhouse making Gose, and I explain how the sour, salted style nearly disappeared before being revived by local brewers.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
