A housing block built like a sculpture, live
Highlights
- Working-class housing treated as sculpture
- Curved brick walls and an unusual corner tower
- A design movement repeated on nearby buildings
- A lesser-known building worth the detour
- A longer afternoon further from the centre
About this tour
This session looks at a housing block built in the early twentieth century as much like a sculpture as a place to live, tucked into an ordinary residential neighbourhood most visitors never reach. You see the building's curved brick walls and unusual tower up close, and then similar details repeated more quietly on the surrounding street. It is a design-focused session about a movement rather than a single famous building.
We circle the main building slowly, since its curves and detail reward looking from more than one angle, then walk a short stretch of the surrounding street. I explain the design movement behind it as we go.
It suits architecture-minded viewers who enjoy a lesser-known building over a famous one. It works well alongside the botanic garden session for a longer afternoon further from the centre.

Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Amsterdam before heading out.
-
Het Schip Exterior 15 min
You see a social housing block shaped with curved brick walls and an unusual corner tower, and I explain how the architect treated ordinary working-class housing as a piece of sculpture.
-
Spaarndammerbuurt Street 15 min
The camera moves along the surrounding street, and I point out smaller details from the same architectural movement repeated on nearby buildings.
-
Your questions 7 min
Time to ask anything about Amsterdam: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 3 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bitterballen and Amsterdam-Noord, worth a slower look.

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
