About this tour

This call helps you plan a self-guided walk across Parker's Piece and the green spaces nearby, built around your own available time and interests rather than a fixed route I would otherwise walk on camera. We talk through the common's layout and its football history, and I flag which details are firmly documented. It is a planning session rather than a live walk.

We start by talking through how much time you have and what you enjoy most, then I sketch out a route that suits it. Questions can range widely, since the whole point is to prepare you properly. Afterwards I send a simple map with notes at each point I mentioned.

It suits independent travellers who prefer to walk at their own pace once they have the background. It also suits anyone planning ahead before a visit rather than looking for a live session.

Itinerary

  1. Hello, and what you want to know 5 min

The guide calls you and asks what you are after: planning Cambridge, recommendations, or just questions.

  2. Common layout and history 17 min

We talk through the shape and history of the open common, including the football story often attached to it, and I explain which parts of the claim are well documented and which are repeated more loosely.

  3. Your questions 5 min

Ask anything that is still on your mind, there is no fixed script.

  4. A written note after the call 3 min

You get a short follow-up message with everything mentioned, so you do not have to remember it all.

Good to know

  • A stable phone or internet connection, whichever the guide uses to reach you.
  • No app to install. You answer when the guide calls, or join a video call if you would rather.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The call is not recorded. Keep your own note of anything you want to remember, or wait for the follow-up message.
  • Have your questions ready, though there is time to think of more as you go.

Questions about this tour

What happens if the call drops?

The guide will try you again straight away.

Can I ask the guide questions during the session, or is it a fixed script?

Anything, any time. Sessions leave room for your own questions throughout, not just at the end.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
