Highlights

  • A seventeenth-century naval warehouse's huge scale
  • An inner courtyard built for loading straight from the water
  • A full-size replica of a historic trading ship
  • Rigging details explained, not just admired
  • A fuller look at the city's relationship with water

About this tour

This session looks at a former naval warehouse and the full-size replica ship moored beside it, together telling the story of the city's trading power at its height. You see the warehouse's huge scale from outside, cross into its open inner courtyard, and finish at the ship's rigging and hull up close. It is a maritime history session built around real, tangible scale rather than a list of dates.

We spend roughly equal time on the warehouse, its courtyard and the ship, since each explains a different part of the same story. I point out specific rigging details on the ship rather than describing it in general terms.

It suits anyone interested in maritime history or how these huge trading ships actually worked. It pairs well with the harbour islands session for a fuller look at the city's relationship with the water.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Amsterdam before heading out.

  2. Scheepvaartmuseum Exterior 21 min

You see a seventeenth-century naval warehouse built around a huge inner courtyard, and I explain what it stored during the height of the city's trading power.

  3. Warehouse Courtyard 21 min

The camera crosses into the building's large open courtyard, and I point out how the surrounding wings were designed for loading goods straight from the water.

  4. Replica Ship 21 min

We finish at a full-size replica of a historic trading ship moored just outside, and I point out details in its rigging that explain how it was actually sailed.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Amsterdam: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Dutch cheese (Gouda, Edam) and De Pijp, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
